A FORTIFIED Roof™ is a voluntary, superior construction designation developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) that exceeds code requirements to protect homes from high winds, hurricanes, and hail. It focuses on strengthening roof edges, sealing the roof deck to prevent water intrusion, and using high-performance, impact-resistant materials.
Roof Protection Against Any Weather
FORTIFIED roofs are designed to protect against severe weather using high-quality materials and superior methods. The process includes:
- Roof Deck Inspection and Securing: The roof deck’s structural integrity is inspected, then nailed to withstand high winds, and seams are taped to minimize water intrusion.
- Premium Underlayment: A premium underlayment is installed, nailed for high-wind conditions, and overlapped for maximum coverage.
- Flashing Replacement: All flashings are replaced during a re-roof for optimal quality and are also nailed to meet high-wind designation standards.
- Shingle Starter Adhesion: The asphalt shingle starter is either a higher grade (self-adhering) or the standard material is set in a ⅛” thick bed of tar to ensure 100% adhesion.
When the necessary roof requirements are met, along with a class IV shingle being used, a FORTIFIED certification is issued to the homeowner, which can be passed along to their insurance company, ensuring the best discounts and premiums.
